Mineral exploitation in north Euboea was initiated sometime in the middle of the 19th century, and the companies at that time engaged in both surface and underground mining.

Many of the natural ports of the area were involved one way or another with the trading or transportation of the ore to calcination facilities.

The sole beneficiation method used was hand pick (performed by women) taking   place both before and after calcination. The calcined ore was hand crushed hot in large open fields in order to avoid suffocation from the produced dust.

Today the situation is very different,  but TERNAMAG operates still in the historic Gerorema area where one of the first metalliferous mines was discovered.
